Kiwi News

Where has the time gone!  April marks FIVE years since Kiwi Knitting first opened its doors!  While it has been 5 years of hard work, it has also been an incredible journey.  There have certainly been customers who have frustrated me (luckily my great employees handle most with ease), and situations that challenge my creativity.  However, what strikes me most is that the yarn business attracts the most wonderful people – people who are real, who are tolerant of my mistakes, who are honest, who are helpful and who are creative.  When I look back over the last five years, I cannot believe how blessed I have been.

So Kiwi is celebrating!  In addition to the usual Anniversary Celebration (more details TBA), we are launching a yearlong celebration by offering classes that honor our roots and our innovations, having special sales and expanding opportunities to help others.  Specifically,

  • The last business day of each month will be “Sale Day” with several items on special at 5 x 5% off & sale table items at 5 x 10% off.
  • Each quarter will honor our roots by including a project by Elizabeth Zimmerman.
  • Each quarter will honor our innovations by including a project/technique by Cat Bordhi,
  • Each quarter will honor knitting across America by including a project from a different section of the country in the book America Knits.
  • This spring we will collect and distribute mittens for our troops in Afghanistan.  (See Brigid’s class for glomitts that will kick off this effort.)
  • Next fall we will again hold a “Make-a-Hat Event”.

This 5-year mark also begins a new era for Kiwi.  With Marianne’s move to Tennessee to be closer to family, all of my original teachers have embarked on new adventures in their lives – Lynda (my first teacher!) to further her education and Salli to her own shop in Nebraska.  (News Flash – I learned this holiday season that she is expanding into an adjoining storefront to include a coffee shop.)   While I am happy for all of them and especially wish Marianne all the good fortune she deserves, I also feared that our class offerings would suffer.  Then whether it was providence or a higher power or just luck, two new teachers walked in to fill the gap (see the next two paragraphs).  Along with Heather’s return, Samantha’s help with crochet and both Brigid and Lisa continuing, Kiwi has a good foundation for the next 5 years!

Kendra McNally, a Tucson native, recently returned as a retiree.  Kendra introduced me to the richness of America Knits when she offered to teach a class in the lace shawl she just finished.  Kendra will be a positive, fun helper in your quest to improve your knitting skills.

Claudia Brust recently moved to Tucson and first visited Kiwi during the holidays.  Claudia signed up for the Fair Isle Workshop – had a great time.  Some how our discussion turned to the possibility of teaching and my fears for our classes melted away especially when a fellow workshop student confirmed her skill as a teacher.  Claudia will teach several knitting and crochet classes this session AND take over the job of Knit Doctor!

Good-Bye Marianne!

We often long for our roots no matter how far we stray from them during our lives.  Marianne has heard this call, and early on Feb 1st, Marianne and her daughter, Julia, will pull out of her Tucson home to return to her roots in Tennessee.  We will miss her patience, her expertise and even her playful admonishments.  Those of you who have taken Marianne’s classes will probably hear her in your mind for years to come when you use some little trick or a technique that she has taught you.  All of us at Kiwi wish Marianne the very best in her new adventure!

Special Events

Felt a Parfleche!  Carolyn Webb returns to Kiwi to share her skills and creativity in felting.  Carolyn has recently created several felted envelops resembling the Native American Parfleche.  The original bags were made from rawhide and the outsides decorated with maps and symbols (mountains and the River of Life being popular subjects).  In this class, you will recreate a parfleche in wool roving and decorate them with yarn embellishments.  You will also create a felted rope and felt beads to tie your parfleche.  Modern uses for your creation include, storage of writing cards and papers or jewelry or as a gift-wrap for a special gift.  Carolyn will also show you ideas for transforming your parfleche into a small clutch or purse.  Materials:  Felting kit provided.  Cost:  $25 + materials fee ($5 – $10 range).   1 – 4 PM Sat Feb 27

Spring’s Featured Book!

Although it is not a new publication, my vote for this spring is America Knits by Melanie Falick.  This book takes you on a knitting journey across the US profiling Fiber experts in each of four regions of the country – East, Southwest, West, and Midwest. It is incredibly interesting to read about the designers, artisans, farmers, and other fiber experts featured some of whom you will readily recognize and others you may not have met.  The featured patterns from many of the personalities run the spectrum from fun to beautiful to very challenging.  We have chosen four to feature in classes this year beginning with the Kousa Dogwood Shawl this spring.  This summer we will play with starfish; in the fall, an entrelac Christmas stocking; and next winter, a color work Navajo design.  Though rich in content, the price is low enough for almost everyone’s pocketbook.  Thanks to Kendra for reintroducing us to this book!
