Kiwi News

What a beautiful spring it’s been so far! I hope you’re enjoying the sunshine and longer days and are looking forward to a fun, playful summer. Along with the cicadas and thunderstorms, the hot weather also brings a shift in our knitting priorities. Now is the perfect time to work on small and lightweight projects such as socks and lace. Lace may look difficult but it’s actually quite easy to learn, and once you’ve mastered the basics the possibilities are endless for lacy scarves, shawls, summer tops, etc. Check out the class offerings inside for some new ideas and techniques in these areas. You’ll see that we’ve also added more Knit One Below classes this summer due to the popularity of Elise Duvekot’s recent book by the same name. If you haven’t already, take advantage of this opportunity to learn her method of creating unique garments with yarns of varying weights, textures and fiber contents.

Believe it or not, this is also a good time to begin your holiday projects. They always take longer than we think, and inevitably new people get added to our gift lists as the year progresses, so it’s smart to start early. We have an array of patterns and yarns to help you get going.

Several new items have arrived in recent weeks. Next time you’re in the shop, be sure to check out the felted bead kits for making beads from roving. The process is fun and the kits work up quickly into lovely gifts and accessories. Rolling and shaping the roving into beads is also a great workout! In the veggie room, we’ve added Garden crochet thread in a number of vibrant colors, along with a great book of related projects. While you’re back there check out Carioca, the new multicolored cotton-blend yarn from Filatura di Crosa, as well as Nova, a colorful, sparkly new yarn from Tahki Stacey Charles.

In the front room you’ll find two exciting new yarns from Trendsetter: Cha Cha and Minestrone. Cha Cha is a wide ribbon yarn that knits up into beautiful, ruffled scarves. Minestrone is a textured, colorful yarn that also makes great scarves and whimsical garments. For velvety soft sweaters and scarves, check out Touch Me by Meunch. We carry this chenille yarn in several lush, saturated colors that people really can’t stop touching!

Fans of the magazine Rebecca will be happy to hear that the new issue has arrived and it is full of gorgeous projects that make use of a variety of yarns and techniques. If you tend to get most of your ideas from Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting, I encourage you to branch out and give Rebecca a look.

On a personal note, I’m thrilled to announce that my son Bryan and his wife Michelle will be having their first baby (a boy) toward the end of the summer. To a knitter, that doesn’t sound like a lot of time, so I better go knit!

Fiber in the Art World

Remember that old country song about a choice piece of oceanfront property in Arizona? Well, there’s a parcel in Scottsdale that you really have to see. The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is an amazing sight: a 2,000-square-foot, hand-crocheted coral reef complete with fiber anemone, starfish, shells and a host of other ocean life all piled atop one another in a realistic and colorful display. The exhibit, which was created by the Institute for Figuring and is being presented by the Scottsdale Public Art Program, has traveled all over the world and will only be in Arizona until July 11. Check it out at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library located at 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. For more information call (480) 312-7323 or visit www.scottsdalecoralreef.com.

Closer to home & a little more personal for Kiwi, check out the juried Student Art Show at Pima Community College. This show is located in the Lou Bernal Gallery at the West Campus. What is special about this show is that Lynda Sorenson was asked to show one of her class assignments. Lynda blogged about this assignment on the Kiwi Blog but was too modest to brag about the fact that it won a spot in this show! You will have to hurry, it ends May 1st.

Tips from the Expert By Marianne Casteel

Stop — don’t trim those ends! You never know exactly how much a garment will change shape after it’s blocked. If you’ve trimmed your ends too close, they may pull into the fabric and pop through to the front. Instead, let end-trimming be your final step. Weave in all ends after seaming, then trim them to a manageable length (about 1.5 inches) before blocking the garment to the desired size. Once the garment is completely dry, trim the ends to their final length. For wool this is often very short because the ends will felt to the wrong side of the garment and stay put, but for slippery yarns like cotton, bamboo and silk, leave a small tail (1/2 inch is about right) dangling to the inside of the garment.

Summer’s Featured Book!

Exploring the Beauty of Estonian Lace By Stefanie Teller

Nancy Bush has done it again. The knitting book author and authority on ethnic knitting traditions has brought us the magic of yet another "stitch niche" in her beautiful new work Knitted Lace of Estonia. The 144-page paperback book, which was published late last year by Interweave Press, balances in-depth historical information and technical details with beautiful photographs and patterns for 14 heirloom-quality projects.

With characteristic precision, Bush, who has published several other titles about folk knitting traditions, explains the unique features of Estonian lace including those mysterious little bobble-like stitches called nupps. ("Nupp" rhymes with "soup," I’m told.) If you’re inspired to tackle one of the book’s scarf or shawl projects you’ll be pleased by the clarity of Bush’s charts and helpful explanations. The Raha Scarf would be a great beginner’s project, thanks to its simple pattern repeat and easy garter stitch borders. For more challenging work, there are breathtaking beauties such as the Queen Silvia Shawl and Maikell Shawl.

No need to be afraid to jump into Estonian lace knitting with this book at your side. But if find you would like a little help, Kiwi offers several lace classes (even one on nupps!) and as always, there’s the Knit Doctor on Friday mornings. Bottom line: Knitted Lace of Estonia is a lovely book full of inspiration, information and many beautiful projects that you’ll enjoy for years to come.
